Scientific laboratories
The cooperation of the SCS department with Motorola began in early 2000, when with the help of Motorola several KPI departments participated in a special program of Motorola to develop educational materials for disciplines focused on training specialists in the field of embedded computer systems. Within the framework of this program, the leading teachers of the SCS department took part in the preparation of the following disciplines:
- CSM 0908: Software Technology of Embedded Systems
- CSM 0922: Microprocessor Systems Performance Analysis
- CSM 0932: Parallel Processing
The next step in the cooperation was the participation of two undergraduates, Associate Professor Alexander Marchenko in the Motorola Talent Pool competition, after winning which they received the right to a three-month internship in the Semiconductor Sector of Motorola. After the internship, these masters successfully defended their master’s theses on Motorola and have been working for many years in Germany and the Czech Republic, in the divisions of Freescale, which was established on the basis of the former Motorola Semiconductor Sector, which merged into a separate company in 2004.
Other students of the SCS department followed the path of the first two undergraduates. After interviews and testing, Motorola selected a number of talented students to whom Motorola decided to provide scholarships to support their interest in developing embedded computing systems.
To support the learning process at the SCS Department in the fall of 2001, with the assistance of Motorola, a training laboratory for embedded computer systems was established.
In addition, more than 20 debug boards with ColdFire family of processors and DSP-processors for digital signal processing were donated to the SCS Department as a sponsorship during the cooperation.
During the collaboration, a total of about 30 students of the SCS department received scholarships from Motorola and Freescale, and after defending their master’s theses worked in their departments.
Given the high qualification of SCS graduates and their excellent work in Motorola and Freescale divisions, in 2007 a new Laboratory for Embedded Computer Systems (LECS) was established at SCS Department with the support of the company. Freescale, which was equipped with the latest computer and office equipment.
Students of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering have always shown excellent knowledge and skills in system and application programming, Motorola and Freescale have always hired all graduates of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering who carried out projects on the topics of these companies, and continue to sponsor the development of educational and scientific laboratories of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
The permanent head of the cooperation of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering with Motorola and Freescale is Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Oleksandr Ivanovych Marchenko.
